Dale Madison Book Signing:
Dream boy My Life as a QVC Host & Other Greatest Hits
Review by Amos Lassen
Dale Guy Madison grew up in Cavalier Manor, a middle class neighborhood in Portsmouth, Virginia and was a happy child with a great desire for fame. He spent high school and college exploring his sexuality and at 23 headed for New York where he had an epiphany of appearing in "Dreamgirls". That did not happen but he knew that he would get his break. He moved to Pennsylvania where he was the first male telephone operator but he collapsed on the job and went into a coma.
He was taken to the mental ward at Sheffield Pratt Hospital where he had trysts with other patients as well as visitors. Fifteen years later he felt that he was like Diana Ross. He had had earlier love affairs with men, married his girlfriend Judy, but continued seeing men on the side. Two years later he was divorced and he met Andre, a man who supported his dramatic yearnings. There were other men as well.
Madison never neglected his dreams of a performance career and eventually he was hired to be a host on QVC and meeting new stars. This lasted four years and landed him a role as a drag queen in the feature film "To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything, Julie Newmar". He also played a drag queen in the film "Stonewall". He went on to do a one man show. What a fascinating life he has had. His book is funny and sweet and gives us quite a look at the man.
